Best Bag Archery Targets of 2019

Practicing archery without a target is like making a hamburger without the buns. It just doesn’t work. Therefore, if you want to practice archery, you’re going to need something to shoot at. Targets don’t have to be expensive and there are many styles to choose from. But today, I’m going to be reviewing my favorite bag archery targets:

  1. Morrell Supreme Range Target (available on Amazon) – extremely durable & sturdy target for the price.
  2. Yellow Jacket Supreme (available on Amazon) – amazing quality & very portable.
  3. Morell Double Duty (available on Amazon) – high quality & very functional design.

These items have been tried and tested and I can recommend them with certainty. However, keep in mind that the targets listed on this page may not necessarily be the highest-end. My goal is to recommend affordable gear while still keeping a high-quality standard. This is the stuff I use.

What should you look for in archery targets?

All targets are different, each with their own pros and cons. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you’re picking a target that works for you. Here is what I look for:

  • Price
  • Durability
  • Material
  • Functionality
  • Portability
  • Special features

Ideally, the perfect target should score well in a good combination of the categories above. Of course, this depends on what you’re interested in.

1. Best overall: Morrell Supreme Range Target

Price

The Morrell Supreme Range Target (available on Amazon) costs costs about $120, which is a decent price for such a high quality target. I paid full price for this target, but it has held up over the past few months. Therefore, I can say that is was well worth the investment.

Durability

From experience, I can tell that this target is made for higher draw weights. This target is tough and I mean it. I have shot hundreds of arrows into the Morrell Supreme Range and it has held up quite well. While some targets usually weaken in certain spots, I haven’t experienced that yet with this one. A great thing about this target is that it “self-heals” as you continue to shoot. When you hit it, the woven bag adjusts, making it “come together” in a way.

One thing that I really love about this target is that it is waterproof. If you want to, you can leave it outside without any problems. Something to keep in mind is that this target fades over time if you leave it in full sun. Therefore, you might want to cover it with a tarp to keep it protected. I use this one from Amazon and it works perfectly.

I like to use a bigger tarp because it allows me to cover the target without much thought or effort. I can wrap it around it and go on with my day. The smallest size that you could probably use is a tarp that is about five feet by five feet. Just keep in mind that you’ll probably have to be more creative with how you cover it. For example, to protect it from the sun, you may have to lay the target down on it’s back and stake the tarp to the ground or use bungee cords.

Material

This target is made of material that is durable and weatherproof. The colors have a high contrast and vibrancy, making it easy to pinpoint a spot to hit. The double-sided design is also a plus. For example, if the target ever degrades in one spot, I can just flip it over and keep shooting.

Functionality

I have tested this target with a variety of draw weights, ranging from 20lb to 40lb and I haven’t had any issues with tearing. The only problem that I’ve noticed is that if you don’t hit the target with enough speed or power, the arrows may bounce off. It doesn’t happen terribly often, but it is still something to consider if you’re shooting with lower draw weights. For that reason, if you’re looking to buy a target for kids, one of the softer ones on this list might be a better option.

As for shooting, arrow retrieval is super efficient. It stops the arrows quickly, without getting them stuck. However, you have to be careful. If your field tips aren’t fitted to your arrows correctly, it can damage the material on the way out.

Another benefit of the Morrell Supreme Range is that it weighs about 55 lbs. This makes it very sturdy, so that it doesn’t tip over when shooting.

Portability

The only downside to this target is that it isn’t very portable. The target itself weighs about 55 pounds, which is not terrible, but it’s not ideal if you want to move it around quickly. That being said, I still love this target. I mainly use it in my backyard as a stationary target and it’s worked wonderfully.

Special features

This target is double-sided. It has a larger ring target on the front and four smaller ring targets on the back.

2. Yellow Jacket Supreme

Best archery target

Price

The Yellow Jacket Supreme (available on Amazon) costs about $50, but I have been lucky enough to find some good deals that have allowed me to purchase it for less. I am even expecting to buy this product again when my current one gets worn out because my current one has held up so well.

Durability

After months of using the Yellow Jacket Supreme, I can say with certainty that this target holds up well. I have shot hundreds of arrows into it and I could probably shoot hundreds more without any problem. The arrows usually never penetrate any more than a few inches. And so far, there aren’t any areas of concern where the material has begun to break down. Unlike with many of the targets that I have used in the past, the durability of this one has remained consistent throughout. I am sure that my bag could take hundreds more hits before ever needing to be replaced.

Another thing to note about this target is that it is waterproof. I have accidentally left it out in the rain before and was able to continue using it without any degradation.

Material

Another great thing about this target is that it doesn’t get much glare, so it allows me to shoot from anywhere without having to readjust. The contrast and vibrancy of the colors also make it easy for me to pick a distinct spot to hit. Not only is the target easier to see from a distance, but it is also easier to see as it begins to get dark outside.

The double-sided design is also a big plus, because if one side ever wears down, I can just flip it over and keep shooting.

Functionality

As for arrow retrieval, this target is fantastic. When shooting, the arrows easily penetrate the plastic sheathing and are easy to remove. In my experience, the arrows have never truly gotten stuck. At worse, I have always been able to pull them out with a slight wiggle.

Furthermore, I have even shot at this target at close range to test its durability. The results are favorable, but even though it held up fairly well, I wouldn’t recommend doing this. Shooting from a close distance will shorten the lifespan of your target. I only did it for testing purposes because I wanted to see how well it held up.

Portability

One of my favorite things about the Yellow Jacket Supreme is its portability. Despite its large size, the target only weighs about 25 pounds. Therefore, it’s fairly light and most healthy adults would be able to move it with relative ease.

For me, this target is easy to set up and easy to move. It has a handle on top that makes it easier to carry. Setting it up is straightforward and simple and, if I am ever going to the range, I can throw it into the back of my car with no problem.

Special features

A great feature about this target is that, if the cover wears out, you can buy a new cover instead of having to buy a whole new target. This will save you about half the price.

3. Morrell Double Duty

Price

The Morrell Double Duty (available on Amazon) costs around $65 which is a standard price for a quality target.

Durability

This target is built for high speed arrows and claims that it can stop up to 450 fps. While this is for the most part true, I wouldn’t recommend using it with anything over 400 fps. It will stop the arrows, but over this point, I have noticed that the arrows tend to dig much deeper. This increases the chances arrow vanes and also makes them much harder to pull out.

Personally, I don’t usually shoot at such high speeds, so this doesn’t bother me. For anything 400 fps or under, I highly recommend this target. Because it is meant to withstand more power, it holds up quite well, especially when shooting at lower speeds. I have had mine for about a year now and despite a few minor holes, the material hasn’t started to degrade. A great thing about this target is that, instead of buying a new one, you can buy a replaceable cover to extend its useful life.

Material

The exterior material that this target is made of is long-lasting and vibrant, making it easy to spot from a distance. In addition, its interior is also very durable. At least in the amount of time that I have had it, it hasn’t degraded or weakened in certain areas.

Functionality

As for arrow retrieval, the arrows penetrate nicely and don’t tend to get stuck. Like I mentioned earlier, this happens mostly when you’re using anything over 400 fps. Something to note is that you should only use field points with this target. This is because other points can get caught and damage the material on the way out.

Portability

The Morrell Double Duty weighs about 35 lbs. This means that it is slightly on the heavier side, but still light enough for most people to carry. The target itself has two handles on its opposite corners, which I think are a bit oddly placed, but they get the job done. I find them more useful for carrying the target between two people. When I’m alone, I prefer to carry it from the bottom.

Special features

My favorite thing about this target is that it is designed so that you can shoot at it from almost all sides, except for the top and bottom. Though I wish that those sides had targets as well, I came up with my own solution. I bought a bottle of spray paint and painted four targets on both the top and bottom of the target. Nothing intricate, but it took me about 5 minutes and I can now shoot at the target from any side.
